Five Vikings Place at the Daktronics Open

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Augustana wrestling team kicked off the 2017-18 season with five student-athletes placing at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. on Sunday.

The top finisher on Sunday for the Vikings was junior Clayton Wahlstrom who finished in third at 197 pounds. Wahlstrom dropped his first match to Nebraska’s Eric Schultz, 9-5, but grinded out three wins in wrestlebacks to take third. Wahlstrom took down Dalton Lunde of Minnesota (5-4), Cade Svoboda of Nebraska (10-5) and Tyree Sutton of Iowa Central (6-4).

stanalogoAt 141 pounds, Colin Ayers also dropped his first match but went on to reel off four consecutive wins in wrestlebacks and eventually took fourth place.

The Vikings also had a trio of wrestlers take sixth place. Bailey Neises at 157, Lukas Poloncic at 174 and Austin Ward at 184 each finished in sixth.

Regan Bye at 165 earned two wins on Sunday and Mitch Rechtzigel at 165, Bruce Lemon Jr. at 165 and Lane Lettau at 285 each picked up one win.

On Saturday, Augustana had 10 wrestlers (four attached, six unattached) compete at the Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, Minn., where Ben Kelvington took first at 174 with two tech falls and two decisions.

The Vikings will compete next Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. and will run all day.
