Gophers Earn Titles at Finn Grinaker Cobber Open

The University of Minnesota sent four wrestlers down to Concordia College to take on the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, and three came back with first-place finishes, along with a third-place finish.

Dylan Anderson, Alex Crowe, and Bailee O’Reilly all claimed first place in their respective weights, while Brenn Olson rebounded from a first-round loss with four straight pins to claim third place.

After a bye in the first round, Anderson won a decision over Austin Rake of St. Cloud State 11-7 to move on to the semifinals. Anderson followed that victory with a pin at 3:48 against David Murphy of Northern State to advance to the finals. He saved his best performance of the day for his final match, pinning his opponent at 1:20 to claim the 184 bracket.

minnlogoO’Reilly also received a bye in the opening round of his bracket, setting up a match with Tanner Smith of Jamestown (N.D.). O’Reilly won by fall at 2:11 of the match, advancing him to the semifinals. After a 9-7 decision, O’Reilly finished off his day with a close 3-2 decision in the finals to finish his day 3-0.

At 149, Crowe wrestled in a round robin format and finished with a 2-0 record. In his first match, Crowe defeated Anthony Raupp of Minot State by tech fall, 21-3. He followed that up with another tech fall against Jakob Weisbrod of Mary.

All five matches Olson competed in on Saturday ended by pin. Olson’s day began with a loss, getting pinned at 6:14 of the match. In the consolation bracket, Olson went to work by picking up falls at 3:31, 1:57 and 1:20 to reach the finals against opponents from St. Cloud State, Minot State and Minnesota State. In the final, Olson picked up his fourth fall, coming at 1:49, to claim third place in 149 Maroon division.
