MSUM Wrestlers Open Week on Tuesday Against Rival Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team makes its 2017-18 home debut on Tuesday when it hosts crosstown rival Concordia College at 7 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

The Dragons will also send wrestlers to the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open on Saturday and will also have wrestlers compete at the Cobber Open in Moorhead.

MSUM is looking to beat the Cobbers in a dual for the first time since 2010 as Concordia has won seven straight meetings, although the last two have been decided by a combined seven points.

moorlogo The Dragons (1-0) opened their season last Wednesday night when they easily defeated Northland Community and Technical College 52-0. The Dragons recorded four pins on the night, along with a technical fall and a forfeit victory. Among those who won by pin were junior Zach Scott, junior Adam Blees, redshirt freshman Jaxon Seufzer, and junior Cody Anderson.

The Dragons competed at the Bison Open on Saturday, where they recorded six top-five finishes. The highest finisher was freshman Evan Foster, who took home a third-place finish at 197 pounds. Sophomore Weston Dobler finished fourth at 165 pounds, while junior Adam Blees took fourth at 174. Freshman Mason Schulz also picked up a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds, while junior Jared Goldsmith finished fifth at 125 pounds. Also taking home a fifth-place finish was redshirt freshman Aaron Sistrunk at 133 pounds.

The Dragons return some veterans from last season’s team, starting with junior Jared Goldsmith, who compiled a record of 15-17 at 125 pounds. Junior Adam Blees returns a 17-11 record at 174. Junior Austin May will look to rebound after missing the majority of last season with a shoulder injury but was 8-4 before his season ended.

Meet The Coaches
Head coach Kris Nelson is in his ninth season at the helm. He will be assisted by Blake Bosch (first season), Bret Maughan (third season), Justin Solberg (third season) and Tyler Lehmann (first season). Nelson has coached five All-Americans during his time at MSUM, as well as several national qualifiers.

About Concordia
The Cobbers enter the dual with just one competition under their belt, the Jamestown Invite. They had four wrestlers earn runner-up finished and a total of 12 top-five finishes. The Cobbers are returning 15 wrestlers from last year’s team. They are led by head coach Phil Moenkedick, who is in his second season.
