No. 13 Northern Iowa Edges NDSU 21-19
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. — No. 13-ranked Northern Iowa needed 141-pounder Josh Alber’s tech fall in the final match to defeat North Dakota State 21-19 in a Big 12 Conference dual on Sunday, Nov. 19, in West Gymnasium. Each team won five matches including a pin and major decision for both.
North Dakota State (0-2, 0-1 #Big12WR will host No. 3 Oklahoma State in Scheels Center at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26.
The Bison had taken a 19-16 lead at 133 pounds when true freshman McGwire Midkiff posted an 11-6 decision over Northern Iowa’s Jack Wagner. Midkiff, from Carter Lake, Iowa, is one of two native Iowans that won for NDSU.
NDSU’s 14th-ranked 157 Clay Ream and 165 Andrew Fogarty helped to put the Bison ahead after three matches. The dual started at 149 pounds.
Ream bolted out of the gate to take an 8-1 lead over Paden Moore in the first period with a pair of takedowns and 4-point nearfall. Ream fought off Moore’s rally for a 15-7 major decision. Ream improved to 5-1 overall, 1-1 in duals this season
Fogarty had to keep the top position in the third period to erase the riding time of UNI Isaiah Patton to force sudden victory overtime. Fogarty wasted little time in the extra period and recorded the fall, his second of the season, at 7:20.
Fogarty recorded a first-period takedown with one-second left for a 2-0 lead. Patton notched a 2-point nearfall to tie the match at 2-2. Fogarty is now 10-2 overall and 1-1 in duals.
With NDSU trailing 12-10, 197-pounder Cordell Eaton overcame a 2-1 first-period deficit to defeat Northern Iowa’s Izaak Shedenhelm 11-6. Eaton, a native of Long Grove, Iowa, improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in duals.
Heavyweight Dan Stibral pushed North Dakota State’s lead to 16-12. Stibral gained the first takedown, built riding time and rolled to a 7-1 decision over Carter Isley. Stibral is now 5-1 overall, 1-1 in duals.
