The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (1-0, 1-0 NSIC) scored a big 39-4 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University (0-1, 0-1 NSIC) in the Huskies’ 2017-18 dual match season opener at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn. on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Before a large Prep Nigh crowd, the Huskies dominated the Mustangs with their lone setback coming at 184-pounds after SCSU had rolled up a 30-0 lead against SMSU.
The wins kept coming with a trio of tech fall victories by #1 Larry Bomstad at 157, Travis Holt and 165 and Kolton Eischens at 174. Cole Hennen of SMSU gained his squad’s lone win with an 11-3 major decision against SCSU’s Austin Rake. The Huskies rallied at 197 with a pin by #8 Vince Dietz at 2:47 before #12 Lawrence Phillips ended the match with a solid 4-1 decision over SMSU’s Andrew Petersen.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to the mat on Saturday competing at the Buena Vista Open.
The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 season on Dec. 3 with a trip to the Newberry Duals in Newberry, S.C. SCSU will face UNC-Pembroke, Limestone, Newberry and Coker at the tournament. Fans can follow the action on TrackWrestling.com
