The St. Cloud State University wrestling team gained the number one spot in the latest NCAA Division II national poll, which was recently released by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Huskies topped the poll with 72 points to earn the top spot ahead of second place California Baptist, which had 64 points.
The Huskies also had six individual wrestlers ranked among the nation’s top NCAA Division II wrestlers in the poll. This group included #1 ranked Brett Velasquez at 125 pounds and Larry Bomstad at 157 pounds. Other Huskies ranked in the poll were Jarred Oftedahl (#4 at 141 pounds), James Pleski (#3 at 149), Vince Dietz (#8 at 197 pounds) and Lawrence Phillips (#12 at 285 pounds).
SCSU will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 30 with a 7 p.m. home dual match against Southwest Minnesota State. This match opens SCSU’s NSIC season and it has also been designated as Youth/Middle School/Prep Night with $1 tickets for all youth in grades K-12. This outstanding value is a great way to introduce a youngster to the great sport of NCAA wrestling. Tickets are available at the gate on the night of the match.
The match will also open SCSU’s defense of its NSIC championship. The Huskies have won six consecutive NSIC championships and were 8-0 in league action last year.
