A Little Dry In The Desert
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Concordia split its first two matches at the Desert Duals but then ran into a steamroller and came away with a 1-2 record in the final meet before the Christmas break.
The Cobbers opened the day by dropping a 30-12 decision against No.11-ranked Coe (Iowa) but then rebounded to beat the Iowa State Club Team 40-9. Concordia then ran into perennial national champion Wartburg and got rolled over coming out on the wrong end of a 54-0 score to the No.2-ranked Knights.
The match against the Iowa State Club Team doesn’t count against the Cobbers’ overall dual-meet record for the year because the squad isn’t an NCAA or NAIA sanctioned team. The two losses drops Concordia’s record to 2-6 on the year. Of the six defeats, five have come against teams ranked in the top 25 of the nation.
Dicks is now 11-6 on the season and his 11 victories are tops on Concordia.
Ty Johnson had the other win against Coe and, like Dick, his also came via a pin. He put his opponent’s shoulders on the mat at the 45-second mark of his match at 149. The win was Johnson’s eighth of the year and he is now 8-6 on the year.
In their match with the Iowa State Club Team, the Cobbers won the first four matches and then four of the final five bouts to come away with a 31-point victory.
The Cobbers won three bouts by a pin, two by a technical fall, two by forfeit and one by a decision.
Freshman Jake Nohre started the team meet by winning 4-0 at 125. Cole Kubesh won on a forfeit before Dick earned his technical fall and then Ben Baumgartner recorded a pin at the 38-second mark in his match at 149 to give CC a 20-0 lead.
Joe Heinz started the second half of Concordia’s back end winning streak by earning a forfeit at 165. Jacob Johnson claimed a 2-0 decision at 174 to push the margin to 29-3. After the Cyclones won at 184, Ethan Kimber recorded a technical fall at 197 and then Kody Van Den Eykel pinned his opponent at 285.
