DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – North Dakota State University 285-pounder Dan Stibral won the final bout and the Bison upset No. 12-ranked Cornell 20-16, but lost 22-18 to No. 22 Rider on Friday, Dec. 29, during the first day of the South Beach Duals at the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex.
North Dakota State (2-5, 0-3 #Big12WR) continues competition at the South Beach Duals at 10 a.m. Central Time Saturday, Dec. 30, against Franklin & Marshall (1-3) and 12 noon CT against Columbia (0-2).
Stibral, a sophomore from Tabor, S.D. (Bon Homme-Scotland HS), recorded a takedown with 11-seconds left to secure an 8-7 decision over Cornell’s Benjamin Honis. Stibral trailed 4-1 in the first period and 6-4 at the start of the third. He notched a pair of third period takedowns for the win.
North Dakota State won five of the first six matches against Cornell (3-1) including victories from No. 23 133 Cam Sykora, 149 Kyle Gliva, No. 15 157 Clay Ream and No. 19 165 Andrew Fogarty – all who were double-winners on the day.
The dual with Rider (4-1) featured three falls that went back-to-back-to-back and were completed in 2-minute, 25-seconds, along with a pair of overtime bouts. Fogarty (20-6, 4-3) moved up to 174-pounds against the Broncs and planted his opponent in 17-seconds for his fourth pin of the season. He claimed a 19-5 major decision, his seventh on the season.
Gliva, a senior from Inver Grove Heights, Minn. (Simley HS) outlasted Rider’s Gino Fluri 8-6 for a sudden victory-1 overtime decision to improve to 13-8 overall including 3-3 in duals. He opened with a 9-6 decision over Cornell’s Hunter Richard.
Ream, a senior from Wentzville, Mo. (Holt HS), earned a 14-6 major decision over Cornell’s Adam Santoro and then bolted out to a 6-0 lead on the way to a 10-5 decision over Rider’s No. 6-ranked B.J. Clagon. Ream moved to 12-3 overall, 6-1 in duals and 2-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Sykora, a sophomore from Wheaton, Minn. (Wheaton HS), claimed a pair of decisions, 4-3 against Cornell’s Charles Tucker and 5-2 over Rider’s Anthony Cefolo. Sykora is 13-3 overall and 4-0 in duals. He is now 16-0 in duals in his first two seasons at NDSU.
North Dakota State 125 Paul Bianchi (15-8, 3-4) opened the dual against Cornell with a 13-9 decision over Cornell’s No. 25 Michael Russo for his second win over a nationally-ranked opponent. NDSU 197 Cordell Eaton (11-7, 3-4) kept the Bison close with Rider with a 6-4 decision over Ethan Laird.
