SCSU on the road to Collegeville

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (5-0, 1-0 NSIC) will continue its 2017-18 season with a match at cross-county rival Saint John’s University (0-1) on Thursday, Dec. 28. The match in Collegeville, Minn. is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

SCSU WRESTLING NOTES AND NEWS:

  • Last year, the Huskies scored a 51-0 victory at home against Saint John’s.
  • The last time SCSU lost a match to SJU was a 25-13 setback on Feb. 9, 2007. SCSU has won the last nine consecutive matches against SJU.
  • SCSU was ranked #1 in the latest NCAA DII national poll. Individually, SCU’s Brett Velasquez (125) and Larry Bomstad (157) were ranked #1 in the nation, while James Pleski was ranked third at 149 and Jarred Oftedahl was ranked fourth at 141. At 197, Vince Dietz earned an 8th place ranking and Lawrence Phillips was ranked #12 at 285.
  • SCSU is the six-time defending NSIC champions and have won league titles in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.
  • SCSU wrestlers with perfect records include Larry Bomstad (13-0 at 157) and Jarred Oftedahl (15-0 at 141). SCSU wrestlers with one loss include Brett Velasquez (10-1 at 125), James Pleski (12-1 at 149), Vince Dietz (14-1 at 197) and Lawrence Phillips (14-1 at 285).
  • SCSU won the NCAA DII national championship in 2015 and 2016. The Huskies finished as the NCAA DII runner-up in 2017, 2013, 2012 and 2011.
  • SCSU won the NCAA DII Super Regional 3 championship in 2017 and the Huskies will host the regional tournament in 2018 in Halenbeck Hall on Feb. 23-24.
  • SCSU won the NWCA DII National Duals tournament in 2017. The Huskies will defend their NWCA Duals title on Jan. 4-5 with a trip back to Fort Wayne, Ind. for the 2018 NWCA DII National Duals.
  • SCSU coach Steve Costanzo begins his 19th season overall as a college head coach in 2017-18. He has a career record of 235-58-2 while coaching 150 National Qualifiers, 81 All-Americans, 7 National Champions and 100 NWCA All-Academic recipients. His overall record at SCSU currently stands at 174-28 since 2006-07 (in his 12th season at SCSU).
