Utah Valley Takes Down NDSU 26-13

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University open with a pin and won seven bouts including six straight during one stretch to defeat North Dakota State 26-13 in a Big 12 Conference dual Friday, Dec. 15, before 518 spectators in Lockhart Arena.

North Dakota State (1-4, 0-3 #Big12WR) is scheduled to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 17. Matches start at 11 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 8 p.m.

NDSU overturned an early 6-0 deficit behind 149-pounder Kyle Gliva and No. 15-ranked 157 Clay Ream. Gliva bulled his way to a 9-1 major decision over Matt Ontiveros to notch his first dual win and improve to 8-6 overall.

ndsulogoReam recorded 12 takedowns en route to a 26-10 tech fall over Raider Lofthouse to put the Bison ahead 9-6. Ream is now 10-3 overall and 4-1 in duals.

However, Utah Valley (5-2, 2-0 #Big12WR) rolled off six straight wins that started with the Wolverines No. 16 Demetrius Romero’s 5-3 sudden victory-1 overtime win over Bison No. 12 165 Andrew Fogarty.

That run included a wild third period between heavyweights, NDSU Dan Stibral and No. 20 Dustin Dennison. Stibral trailed 3-1 entering the third, but rattled off eight points including a takedown and 4-point nearfall. Dennison had to rally with a reversal, 4-point nearfall and takedown to earn a 12-9 win.

NDSU 133 Cam Sykora stopped the run with a 12-3 major decision over Utah Valley’s Durbin Lloren. Sykora improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in duals
