Final Match Win Helps Marauders Edge Dragons
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team dropped a 19-16 match to the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The dual was tied going into the final match, but the Marauders pulled out an overtime victory to earn the three-point win.
The Dragons are now 1-6 overall, and 0-4 in NSIC competition.
The dual was tied at 16-16 heading into heavyweight where MSUM redshirt freshman Jordan Magnuson battled with Mary’s Dominic Tudor. The match ended up 4-4 after regulation but Tudor scored a takedown in the overtime period to take the win.
The dual started at 125 pounds, where Dragon freshman Cole Jones won an 8-3 decision over Nate Humann to improve to 14-10 on the year. After two straight Mary wins, the Dragons picked up a win at 149 pounds where Joe Schumacher hit a cradle for four near-fall points in the closing seconds to win his Dragon debut.
Mary won by technical fall at 157 and by major decision at 165 to build a 16-6 lead with four weights remaining.
The Dragons started to rebound at the 174 pound match, where junior Adam Blees won a 2-1 overtime decision over Austin Eichmann. Redshirt freshman Mitch Kotschevar won a 3-2 decision over Mary’s Jackson Schichel at 184 pounds, which was followed by a major decision win by sophomore Preston Lehmann at 197 pounds. That rally tied the dual at 16-16.
The Dragons will be back at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on Thursday night when they host the No. 1 St. Cloud State Huskies. The dual will begin at 7 p.m.
