Mustangs return to the mat with back-to-back, midweek duals

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State will look to build on a 1-1 record from last week as it hosts Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in the PE Gym followed by a road, NSIC dual at Upper Iowa on Thursday night at 7 p.m., in the Dorman Gymnasium.

Wednesday’s home dual versus Dakota Wesleyan was originally scheduled for Nov. 16 but was moved to Jan. 24 to better accommodate both teams. SMSU went 1-1 last week, rebounding from a Thursday night loss at Augustana with its first conference win of the season in a 37-6 win over Northern State on Friday night. The Mustangs had three pins in their win over Northern State and dropped bouts in just two weight classes. Justin Haneke (15-7) went 1-1 with his eighth pin of the year on Friday against Billy Holtan of Northern State. Taylor Curtis (10-7) went 2-0 on the week with a 15-4 major decision over Jay Maxville of Northern State. Andrew Petersen (14-7) also went 2-0 against his pair of conference opponents. Cortez Arredondo (13-6) went 2-0 as well for SMSU wrestling at 157 for SMSU.

Justin Haneke (149) holds a 15-7 overall record on the year with eight pins. Andrew Petersen (HWT) has racked up a 14-7 record on the season with three pins and a 2-1 record against NSIC opponents. Cortez Arredondo (157) has a 13-6 record on the year with a 2-1 record against conference opponents. Taylor Curtis (125) has a 10-7 overall record on the year and a 2-1 record in the NSIC.

Dakota Wesleyan overall record: 0-10. Stas Sutera has a 15-12 record on the season for DWU. DWU is coming off of an 0-4 weekend in the UNK Duals with losses to Cloud County Community College, Bethany College, Neosho Community College, and Northwest Kansas Technical College. SMSU holds a 7-0 all-time record against Dakota-Wesleyan. The Mustangs won the last matchup between the two schools, 40-6 on the road back in 2015-16.

SMSU vs Upper Iowa Notes:
Upper Iowa enters the week as the No. 6 team in the latest DII team rankings. Upper Iowa leads the all-time series with SMSU, 13-4. The Peacocks have won the last 14 duals since the 2004-05 season after SMSU won the first four all-time matchups. Dalton Hahn (184) of Upper Iowa was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week. The No. 6 Peacock wrestling team rallied from a three-point deficit to win 18-12 over No. 16 Minnesota State last week. Maleek Williams is the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 125. Josh Walker is the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 133. Brock Benitz is the No. 7 ranked wrestler at 157. Nick Becker is the No. 8 ranked wrestler at 174. Kameron Teacher is the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 285.
