#1 St. Cloud State ends weekend trip with victory at Mary

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team continued its drive for a seventh consecutive NSIC championship with a 32-6 victory at the University of Mary on Saturday, Jan. 20. The victory improved SCSU’s record to 14-0, 3-0 NSIC, while Mary moved to 4-5, 1-2 NSIC.

The Huskies will travel to Northern State for an NSIC dual match in Aberdeen, S.D. on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

In action at Mary, #5 Brett Velasquez opened the action with an 8-2 decision against Nate Humann of Mary at 125-pounds. At 133-pounds, SCSU’s Adam Hedin lost a close 6-2 match against #9 Tate Barnhardt of Mary.

SCSU got back on track at 141-pounds at #3 Jarred Oftedahl rolled to an 11-0 major decsion and #1 James Pleski posted a 4-1 win over Mary’s Reed Cronin at 149. #1 Larry Bomstad remained undefeated this season with a 5-2 victory at 157-pounds and #6 Travis Holt lost a 5-2 decision against #11 ranked Phillip Springsteen of Mary.

The Mary rally was shortlived as Devin Fitzpatrick edged Mary’s Austin Eichmann by a 3-2 tally at 174. The Huskies then rolled to three consecutive wins in the upper weight brackets to ice the team victory. #8 Brady Nelson added extra points with a 10-1 major decision at 184-pounds and #6 Vince Dietz scored a forfeit win at 197. In the final bout of the day, #10 Lawrence Phillips registered a fall at 4:33 against Mary’s Dominic Tudor.

SCSU has now won 23 consecutive dual matches dating back to 2016-17. SCSU wrestling fans should mark Feb. 23-24 on their calendars as the Huskies will host the 2018 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional in Halenbeck Hall.
