St. Cloud State captures 2018 NWCA DII National Duals Championship

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (10-0, 1-0 NSIC) captured its second consecutive NWCA Division II National Duals championship with a pair of dual match wins over #12 Nebraska-Kearney and #25 Seton Hill on Friday, Jan. 5 in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Huskies charted a 4-0 record at the NWCA DII National Duals tournament and it marks the fourth time since 2012 that the Huskies have won the DII duals team title.

SCSU opened the day on Jan. 5 with a 21-12 victory over #12 Nebraska Kearney. Down 6-0 after the first two matches of the match, the Huskies rallied at 141-pounds with a 1-0 win by #4 Jarred Oftedahl. SCSU continued the run with a 3-1 OT win by #5 James Pleski at 149-pounds and an 11-6 decision by #1 Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds. #8 Travis Holt continued his solid senior season with a 4:38 fall over UNK’s Brayden Willis at 165. #7 Kolton Eischens moved SCSU’s lead to 18-6 with a 12-10 decision win at 174-pounds. The Huskies brought home the win with a 13-7 victory at 197-pounds by Vince Dietz.

scsulogo The victory over UNK set up a championship dual showdown against Seton Hill, which earned its trip to the finals with a 19-18 win over Gannon in the semifinals.

The Huskies made a strong statement in the title bout with a 41-0 victory over Seton Hill. SCSU dominated from start to finish in the match as Adam Hedin (133), Brady Nelson (184) and #10 Lawrence Phillips (285) all gained extra points with falls in the match. In a match between two of the nation’s top 125-pounder, #2 Brett Velasquez gained a 5-4 win over #4 Alan Diltz of Seton Hill. Bomstad (157) and Dietz (197) also added major decision victories for the Huskies on the way to the title.

The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 with a trip to the Ranger Duals, which will be hosted by UW-Parkside on Jan. 13 in Kenosha, Wisc. SCSU fans should mark Feb. 23-24 on their calendars as the Huskies will host the 2018 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional tournament in Halenbeck Hall. Of note, this year’s NCAA Division II championships will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 9-10.
