St. Cloud State’s James Pleski named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

St. Cloud State University sophomore James Pleski (Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake H.S.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 1-7.

The nation’s fifth-ranked wrestler in the NCAA Division II ranks at 149-pounds this season, Pleski helped lead the No. 1 Huskies to a first-place finish at the 2018 NWCA DII National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Jan. 4-5.

scsulogoHe opened the NWCA tournament with a 15-6 major decision victory over Elliot Molloy of No. 9 Indianapolis in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal dual against #12 ranked Nebraska Kearney, Pleski scored a 3-1 victory in overtime against the defending NCAA DII champion at 149-pounds, Keith Surber of UNK.

To end the tournament with a perfect record, Pleski charted a 5-4 victory over #11 ranked Joey Alessandro of #25 Seton Hill in the championship dual match. Of note, Alessandro earned NCAA DII runner-up honors in the 141-pound bracket in 2016.

The 3-0 record at the NWCA duals improved Pleski’s record to 15-1 on the season.

As a team, SCSU captured first place at the NWCA DII National Duals for the second consecutive season in 2018. The Huskies earned the crown with wins over #15 Lake Erie, #9 Indianapolis, #12 Nebraska Kearney and #25 Seton Hill.

SCSU will continue its 2017-18 season on Jan. 13 with a trip to the 2018 Ranger Duals, which will be hosted by UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisc.
