Amo Wins Third Straight Region Title; Poloncic Qualifies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior Aero Amo and sophomore Lukas Poloncic will be representing the Augustana wrestling team at the national meet after qualifying at the Super Region 3 Championships in St. Cloud, Minn. this weekend.

Augustana’s two national qualifiers will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the Division II Wrestling National Championships on March 9-10. As a team, the Vikings finished in sixth with 65.5 points. St. Cloud State won the team title with 161 points.

Aero Amo won the 184 pound Central Region 3 title for the third straight year with a first period pin. Amo pinned St. Cloud State’s Tyree Overton in 40 seconds. Amo defeated all four of his opponents in the first period with a tech fall in the first round and pins in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.

Lukas Poloncic fell to Kolton Eischens of St. Cloud State in the 174-pound third place match and took fourth at the weight class to clinch his first career nationals appearance.

Clayton Wahlstrom defeated Jackson Ryan of SMSU by a 3-2 decision and earned fifth place at 197 pounds.

Keaten Schorr finished in sixth at 141 pounds after falling to Danny Swan of Lindenwood by a 7-6 decision.

Session III
Session III saw the Vikings qualify two wrestlers for the national tournament with a shot a two more.

Aero Amo (184) advanced to his third consecutive Super Region 3 Championship finals with a first period pin in the semifinals. Amo pinned McKendree’s Ryan Vasbinder in 1:40 to secure his spot in the finals.

Lukas Poloncic (174) won both of his matches in the session, moving to the third-place match and clinching a spot in the NCAA Championships. Poloncic clinched his spot at nationals by having defeated both wrestlers in the fifth-place match earlier in the tournament. Poloncic defeated Griffin Osing of SMSU by a 3-0 decision and avenged an earlier loss to Jordan Gundrum of Upper Iowa with an 11-8 decision.

Keaten Schorr (141) and Clayton Wahlstrom (197) lost both of their matches in the session and will wrestle for fifth place.

Brandon Carroll (125), Brayden Curry (133) and Oscar Ramirez Jr. (149) saw their season’s come to an end during Session III.
