ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Augustana wrestling team sits in the top-five and has three semifinalists after day one of the Super Region 3 Championships in St. Cloud, Minn.
Keaten Schorr (141), Aero Amo (184) and Clayton Wahlstrom (197) each made it to the semis and Brandon Carroll (125), Brayden Curry (133), Oscar Ramirez (149) and Lukas Poloncic (174) are all still alive.
The Vikings sit in fifth in the team race with 42.5 points. St. Cloud State holds the top team score with 75 points. McKendree, Upper Iowa, Minnesota State and Augustana round out the top-five.
The Super Region 3 Championships will continue tomorrow, Feb. 24 with Sessions III and IV. Session III will start at 11 a.m. with the semifinals and consolations. Session IV will begin at 4 p.m. with the first, third and fifth place matches.
Keaten Schorr (141) kept his stellar freshmen season going by making a trip to the semifinals at 141 pounds. Schorr outlasted Danny Swan of Lindenwood with a 10-8 decision in sudden victory. Schorr will take on three-time All-American Darren Wynn of McKendree.
Aero Amo (184) cruised his way to the semis with a first period pin. Amo pinned John Oss of Drury in 45 seconds for his second first period, bonus point win of the day. Amo will take on true freshman Ryan Vasbinder of McKendree in the semifinals.
Clayton Wahlstrom (197) became the third Viking to advance to the semis with a win in his lone match on Friday. Wahlstrom defeated Jackson Ryan of SMSU by a 5-3 decision. Wahlstrom will take on Nick Baumler of Upper Iowa in the semis tomorrow.
Brayden Curry (133) and Lukas Poloncic (174) each dropped a match in the quarterfinals, but won in the consolations to stay alive. Curry fell to Hunter Haralson of Lindenwood by a 4-0 decision in the semis and came back to defeat Seth Hutchison of MSU Moorhead by a 13-4 major decision. Poloncic fell to Kolton Eischens of St. Cloud State by a 12-8 decision and defeated Parker Osterman of Minot State with a second-period tech fall.
Brandon Carroll (125) outlasted Dean Arevalo of Minot State by a 10-8 decision in sudden victory in the second round consolations. Oscar Ramirez (149) picked up a third-period fall against Rudy Guillen of U-Mary to advance.
Bruce Lemon Jr. (157), Regan Bye (165) and Luke Nohns (285) all had their seasons come to an end on Friday.
After Session I, Augustana had all 10 wrestlers move on to Session II with six wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals and four making their way to the second round consolations.
Both Viking true freshmen opened the regional with decisions. Brayden Curry at 133 pounds defeated Brock Buysse of SMSU by a 7-2 decision and Keaten Schorr at 141 pounds took down Trent Butcher of SMSU by a 4-0 decision.
The Vikings got back-to-back tech falls at 174 and 184 pounds. Lukas Poloncic (174) won by a third-period tech fall against Allan Person of Central Missouri and Aero Amo (184) earned a first-period tech against Jorge Guerrero of Lindenwood.
Clayton Wahlstrom (197) had a first-round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals without wrestling a match in Session I.
In the first round of wrestle-backs, Brandon Carroll (125), Oscar Ramirez Jr. (149) and Regan Bye (165) each earned falls and Bruce Lemon Jr. (157) earned a decision. Carroll recorded a second-period fall against John Feeney of Central Missouri. Ramirez scored a third-period pin of Jordan Jones of Drury. Lemon picked up an 8-3 decision against Zach Berry of Minot State. Bye also picked up a second-period fall against Zach Taylor of Truman State.
