MINNEAPOLIS — Augsburg University’s Ryan Epps (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS) was named D3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday by D3wrestle.com, a website that covers NCAA Division III wrestling.
Entering the week as the No. 3-ranked 157-pounder in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, Epps had an impressive set of matches, headlined by a 9-6 upset win over top-ranked Logan Thomsen of Wartburg (Iowa) on Thursday in the annual “Battle of the Burgs” dual between the two Division III wrestling powers.
On Saturday, Epps scored four victories, including a pin and major decision, in winning the 157-pound title at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Don Parker Open. Three of his four wins came against upper-division wrestlers — a 1:10 pin of Division II Minnesota State-Mankato’s Don Boone, a 12-3 major decision over Justin Dravis of Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead (wrestling unattached) and an 8-2 win over James Berg of Division I Minnesota. In the finals, he scored a 7-2 win over Scott Schieldt of Wisconsin-Whitewater to capture his fifth tournament title of the season.
Epps is now 32-1 on the season with 12 bonus-point wins (seven pins, one technical fall, four major decisions) and has won his last 16 matches in a row. On Monday, Epps moved into the top spot in the latest NWCA Division III national rankings for the first time in his career. An NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier last season, Epps is now 66-8 in his two seasons at Augsburg, with 12 pins, six technical falls and nine major decisions to his credit.
Now 12-2 in dual meets and ranked No. 2 in the NWCA poll, Augsburg travels to face Saint John’s in a dual meet on Friday (2/9) at 7 p.m.
