Gopher Freshmen Wrestle at National Collegiate Open

The University of Minnesota sent five freshmen to the National Collegiate Open, which took place in Dover, Del. on Sunday. The Gophers had one podium finisher, Bailee O’Reilly, who finished in fifth place with a 4-2 record.

O’Reilly increased his winning streak during the tournament to 10 before falling in the semifinals to the eventual champion Devin Kane of North Carolina. The 10-match winning streak is the longest by any freshman this season for Minnesota.

minnlogoThe Gophers had three wrestlers in the quarterfinals, which included Brent Jones (141) and Alex Crowe (157) and O’Reilly (174).

Tyler Waterson and Jakob Bergeland also competed, both in the 149-pound division. Bergeland picked up his eighth pin of the season in the consolation bracket, which ties him for the most on the team this season with Mitch McKee. Bergeland now has 22 total wins, the most of any redshirting freshman, with 15 being bonus point wins.
