The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (19-0, 8-0 NSIC) completed its first day of competition at the 2018 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional by advancing eight wrestlers in the semifinals of the tournament.
The Huskies opened the day by gaining eight falls, one major decision and one bye in the first round. In the second session of the day, SCSU advanced wrestlers in the championship bracket at 125, 133, 141, 149, 174, 184, 197 and 285.
SCSU currently sits in first place in the team standings with 75.0 points.
At 133-pounds, Adam Hedin scored a first round fall at 4:15 against Caleb Osborn of Truman State. He remained in the hunt for first with a big 8-6 victory over McKendree’s Naquan Hardy.
At 141-pounds, Jarred Oftedahl rolled to a 2:27 fall in the first round against Josh Moore of NSIC rival Northern State. In the quartefinals, Oftedahl added bonus points with a tech fall win over Jered Sublet of Minot State. He tallied a score of 17-0 that ended the match at 5:00.
James Pleski also advanced to the bracket semifinals with a pair of wins on Feb. 23. He opened with a fall at 2:46 of the first against Dakota Schutter of Truman State and also posted a 19-10 major decision win against Justin Haneke of Southwest Minnesota State.
At 157, Larry Bomstad opened his tournament with a 4:10 fall against Zach Berry of Minot State. In the quarters, Bomstad suffered a tough 4-3 setback before returning in the consolation bracket with a 5-2 win over Ben Stahlman of Drury to stay alive. At 165, Devin FitzPatrick scored a pin at 4:00 against Tucker Black of Upper Iowa in the first round. In the quarterfinals, FitzPatrick lost a close 11-8 match against Seth Elwood of Minnesota State. In the wrestleback round, FitzPatrick posted a 5-4 win over Regan Bye of Augustana to advance to Saturday.
In action at 174, Kolton Eischens earned a first round bye before chalking up a 12-8 win over Lukas Polonic of Augustana in the quarters. At 184-pounds, Tyree Overton charted two wins to score seven team points. He posted a 20-10 major decision in the first round over Mitchell Kotschevar of MSU Moorhead. In the quarterfinals, Overton added a 7-5 victory over Cole Hennen of Southwest Minnesota State.
At 197-pounds, Vince Dietz scored a fall at 1:46 against Dylan Ballew of Drury in the first round. He completed his first day on the mats with an 8-0 major decision win against Samuel Reeves of Truman State.
To wrap up the first day of competition at the regional for the Huskies, Lawrence Phillips gained a pair of pins at 285. He started the day with a 3:47 fall against Ben Melton of Drury. In the quarterfinals, Phillips added his 15th pin of the season with a fall at :29 against Dominic Tudor of Mary.
The Regional championship will continue on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Halenbeck Hall. The doors will open at 10 a.m. and matches will get underway at 11 a.m. The final session of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Tickets for the tournament are available at the gate on Feb. 24.
