Iowa State Comes Back to Edge NDSU 21-20 in Big 12 Conference Dual

FARGO, N.D. – Iowa State University won the final five matches and six overall to edge North Dakota State University 21-20 by criteria in a Big 12 Conference dual Friday, Feb. 2, before 621 spectators in Scheels Center.

NDSU (6-9, 0-6 #Big12WR) is scheduled to host the Air Force Academy (6-2, 1-1 #Big12WR) at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in a Big 12 Conference duals at Scheels Center. Air Force hosts West Virginia tonight. The Bison wrestling program will honor seniors, 149 Mitch Bengtson, 149 Mitch Friedman, 149 Kyle Gliva, 285 Jerrad Nieland and 157 Clay Ream prior to the dual.

ndsulogoTrailing 20-3, Iowa State (7-7, 2-4 #Big12WR) chipped away at the deficit. Brady Jennings recorded a 7-2 decision over No. 19-ranked 165-pounder Andrew Fogarty, Danny Bush held off Dylan Urbach by the score of 12-9 at 174. Sam Colbray posted a 5-3 sudden victory-1 overtime win over Cordell Eaton at 197.

The Cyclones notched a pair of major decisions by 184 Dane Pestano, 19-5 over Cole Witzig and 285 Marcus Harrington, 10-2, in the dual’s final match. That tied the score at 20-all, but gave Iowa State a 6-4 edge in bout wins for the criteria point.

North Dakota State rolled early. Bison 125-pounder Paul Bianchi (21-10 overall, 9-6 duals) collected his sixth pin of the season at 4:39 over Sinjin Briggs. That was followed by the 10th tech fall of the season for NDSU 133 Cam Skora, 19-4 at 6:29, against Markus Simmons. Sykora improved to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in duals.

NDSU’s lead moved to 17-0 when 141-pound freshman McGwire Midkiff then received a forfeit. Iowa State’s 15th-ranked Ian Parker didn’t make the trip due to an injury.

North Dakota State’s No. 9-ranked 157 Clay Ream posted an 8-2 decision over Chase Straw to push the lead to 20-3. Ream is now 19-3 overall and 13-1 in duals.
