Mustangs drop tight battle with U-Mary

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State won two bouts by tech fall and had one pin but let a two-point lead slip away with a loss by decision in the final bout of the night as the University of Mary came away with a 20-19 win on Friday night in the PE Gym.

Taylor Curtis (125) suffered a tough loss by sudden victory to begin the night for SMSU and U-Mary earned a win by tech fall to go ahead 8-0 after the first two bouts.

Trent Butcher (141) controlled his bout from start to finish and earned a 14-7 win by decision to get SMSU on the board. Justin Haneke (149) then earned his ninth pin of the season to give SMSU a 9-8 lead.

smsulogo U-Mary won three straight bouts beginning with the 157 weight class to go ahead 17-9 with just three bouts remaining.

The Mustangs looked like they’d taken all of the momentum back with back-to-back tech falls to edge out a 19-17 lead with the heavyweights as the only remaining bout.

Cole Hennen (184) defeated Jackson Schichel 15-0 which was followed by a 16-1 win by Jackson Ryan (197) to put SMSU in front.

Andrew Petersen, nursing a lower body injury, was even with Dominic Tudor at 2-2 before eventually falling 6-2 in the final bout of the evening.
