Minnesota State 42, Northern State 3

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Minnesota State wrestling team defeated Northern State Thursday evening in South Dakota after winning nine consecutive weight classes to tame the Wolves 42-3.

With the win, the Mavericks advanced to 6-4 overall and are now 4-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Duals. Northern State falls to 1-12 and holds an NSIC mark of 0-6 with the loss.

Minnesota State trailed 3-0 early in the dual after dropping the first match of the night at 165-pounds. Zach Johnston then knotted the team score at 3-3 with a 6-3 decision over Kaden Campbell at 174-pounds. Johnston improved to 17-5 with the victory and leads the Mavericks with 13 decisions this season.

manklogo Corey Abernathy followed with a decision victory of his own at 184-pounds. Abernathy scored two takedowns and near-fall in the final period of his match to win a 7-2 decision over Riley Lura. Matthew Blome gained a first-period fall to extend the Minnesota State lead to 12-3 in the dual. The pin for Blome was his first since January 12 and began a streak of five matches with bonus-point victories for the Mavericks.

Chris Zimmer led Justice Horn 12-1 after the first period in the heavyweight match. Zimmer went on to win by technical fall, his first of the season, with a final score of 19-1 over Horn.

After leading 17-3 at the midpoint of the dual, the Mavericks started the second half with three consecutive pins. Andrew McFall ended his match abruptly with a quick second-period fall. The fall was the Illinois natives first of the season. McFall has now won seven of his last eight matches. George Farmah gained a first-period fall at 133-pounds in 2:10, the quickest pin of the night, to put Minnesota State up 29-3.

Louie Sanders claimed his 15th win of the season with a fall at 2:53 over Josh Moore. Sanders and Blome lead the Mavericks with 5 pins apiece this season. Kyle Rathman gained his tenth bonus-point victory of the season with a 15-4 major decision over Griffin Hieb at 149-pounds and advanced his overall record to 19-6.

The last match of the evening pitted the previous two NSIC Wrestler of the Week award winners against one other in Daniel Close and Wolves senior Tanner Olson. Close controlled the match throughout and added a riding-time point to win a 7-2 decision and seal the Mavericks 42-3 victory. Close has won his last three matches and 14 of the last 15.

Minnesota State will next travel to Marshall, Minn., to take on Southwest Minnesota State Friday at 7:00 p.m. in its final dual of the season.
