#1 St. Cloud State wrestling remains undefeated with 19-13 win at Mankato

The #1 St. Cloud State wrestling team (17-0, 6-0 NSIC) battled to a 19-13 victory at #16 Minnesota State Mankato (5-4, 3-3 NSIC) on Saturday, Feb. 3. This marked the 26th consecutive dual match victory for the Huskies in a winning streak that dates back to the 2016-17 season.

In a very close match at Mankato, the Huskies opened the day with a 1-0 decision by #3 Jarred Oftedahl over MSU’s Louie Sanders of MSU at 141. SCSU pushed its lead to 6-0 with a 3-1 victory by #1 James Pleski over #11 ranked Kyle Rathman at 149.

scsulogoAt 157 pounds, SCSU’s Larry Bomstad lost a 10-2 major decision against Daniel Close of Mankato. The Huskies quickly rebounded at 165 pounds with a 6-4 OT victory by #6 Travis Holt over MSU’s Dylan Herman.

In a battle between two top 10 ranked wrestlers at 174 pounds, MSU’s Zach Johnston gained an 11-5 win over #3 Kolton Eischens of SCSU. The Mavericks continued their winning ways at 184 pounds with a victory by Corey Abernathy over Tyree Overton and a 5-1 win by #9 Matt Blome against #6 ranked Vince Dietz at 197 pounds.

SCSU then wrapped up the victory with three consecutive wins at 285, 125 and 133. #10 Lawrence Phillips started the run with an 8-3 victory at 285 pounds against Chris Zimmer of Mankato. At 125 pounds, #5 Brett Velasquez charted key extra points with an 11-3 major decision over MSU’s Andrew McFall. To end the day, Adam Hedin chalked up a 6-3 win over MSU’s George Farmah at 133 pounds.

Minnesota State will close out their NSIC dual schedule away at Northern State, Feb. 8 and Southwest Minnesota State, Feb. 9.

The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 season on Feb. 8 with a 7 p.m. home match against Upper Iowa at Halenbeck Hall. The match has been designated as SCSU Wrestling Alumni Night. All former SCSU wrestlers are encouraged to come back to the match and also attend the post-match social at Howie’s Sports Bar and Grill in downtown St. Cloud.
