NDSU 157 Ream, 165 Fogarty Advance in NCAA Wrestling Consolation Round

CLEVELAND, Ohio – North Dakota State University 157-pounder Clay Ream and 165 Andrew Fogarty advanced in the consolation bracket at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships before a Session II crowd of 18,680 on Thursday, March 15 in Quicken Loans Arena.

NDSU is tied for 41st in the team standings with 3 points. Ohio State leads with 36 points. Session III starts at 10 a.m. CT Friday. The 11th-seeded Ream (24-5) starts with 12th-seeded Mike Finesilver (19-6) of Duke, while Fogarty battles Cornell 16th-seeded Jonathon Chavez (20-6) on Friday morning.

Both Ream and Fogarty lost opening round matches, but rebounded with wins in the second session. Ream (24-5) jumped out to an 8-3 lead after the first over Cal State Bakersfield’s Coleman Hammond, but Hammond kept the top position for the entire second. Ream responded with a pair of takedowns to secure the win. Stanford’s Paul Fox defeated Ream 4-2 in the first round for the second straight season.

ndsulogoFogarty (30-11) came out strong and built a 4-1 lead and 1:33 of riding time in the first period over Duke’s Zach Finesilver. However, Finesilver kept the top position for the second to erase riding time. Fogarty returned the favor in the third and gained the point for riding time. Fogarty defeated Finesilver 5-1

Bison 133 Cam Sykora (23-11) turned in a solid performance. Sykora opened with an 11-3 major decision over Cameron Kelly of Ohio University. He dropped an exhausting 2-1 tiebreaker-1 overtime decision to 6th-seeded Scott Parker of Lehigh. Corey Keener of Penn State built a 9-5 first period lead over Sykora and held on for a 9-7 win. Sykora is 2-4 in two NCAA appearances.

NDSU 125 Paul Bianchi (24-15) dropped a 14-1 major decision to 12th-seeded Louie Hayes of Virginia in his first-round match. Michael McGee of Old Dominion recorded a third-period takedown for a 7-4 decision.
