FARGO, N.D. – Fifteen wrestlers with North Dakota State University ties will participate at the 2018 United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior Nationals/Marine Corps US Open tournament scheduled for April 26-28 at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas. Former NDSU All-American Hayden Zillmer will compete in the US Open Senior Freestyle 92 KG (202.8 pounds). Zillmer defeated India’s Deepak Punia 7-0 to help Team USA defeat India 10-0 on April 7 in the first round of the 2018 Freestyle World Cup at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
The US Open Senior Freestyle 57 KG (125.6 pound) bracket includes former Bison standout and three-time NCAA qualifier Josh Rodriguez. NDSU volunteer assistant Chase Nelson will compete in the US Open Senior Men’s Greco-Roman at 67 KG (147.9 pounds).
Meanwhile, West Fargo, N.D., freshman heavyweight Brandon Metz is scheduled to compete in both the UWW Junior Nationals and Greco-Roman tournaments at 125 KG (275.5 pounds).
Metz headlines a youthful group of 10 wrestlers headed for the UWW Junior Freestyle event including Paul Bianchi at 57 KG (125.6 pounds), McGwire Midkiff and Sawyer Degen at 61 KG (134.4 pounds), Gavin Sutton and Austin Braun at 65 KG (143.3 pounds), Jaden Van Maanen at 70 KG (154.3 pounds), Nick Knutson at 74 KG (163.1 pounds), Jesse Shearer at 79 KG (174.1 pounds) and Michael Otomo at 86 KG (189.5 pounds).
In addition, incoming NDSU wrestlers, Jared Franek and Noah Cressell, are scheduled to participate in the freestyle tournament at 70 KG (154.3 pounds) and 86 KG (189.5 pounds), respectively.
