MANHEIM, Pa. – For the fourth season in a row, the South Dakota State University wrestling team has been honored as a Top-30 All-Academic Team by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The Jackrabbits placed 17th in the standings with a team grade-point average of 3.273. The team GPA was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier, plus two others who competed during the 2017-18 season.
SDSU’s standing over the past four years have included:
2014-15, 23rd, 3.09 team GPA;
2015-16, 19th, 3.155;
2016-17, 12th, 3.336; and
2017-18, 17th, 3.273.
Individually, four Jackrabbit wrestlers were recognized as NWCA Division I All-Academic Individuals. Seniors David Kocer, Nate Rotert, and Luke Zilverberg were joined on the squad by freshman Connor Brown. The senior trio all were repeat selections.
Individuals can qualify for the All-Academic Team by meeting the following criteria: achieving a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and winning 60 percent of his season’s schedule and/or was a 2018 NCAA qualifier, or by achieving a 3.0 cumulative GPA and earning All-America honors in 2018.
A total of 155 student-athletes received NWCA All-Academic recognition.
