Lee Crowned Junior National Champion, McKee Places Third

Fargo, ND – Three future Gophers took to the mats in Fargo this week competing at the Junior National Championships. Brayton Lee and Patrick Mckee each ended their tournaments on the podium gaining Junior National All-American Honors.

Brayton Lee wrestled to a first-place finish in Fargo and earned the title of Junior National Champion at the 152-pound weight class. The Brownsburg, Ind., native held an unblemished record through seven matches and entered the finals of his weight class having won all of his previous matches by technical fall, outscoring his opponents by a score of 61-0. Lee defeated his final opponent by criteria after finishing the match 3-3 and taking the top spot on the podium.

minnlogoWrestling at the 126-pound weight class, Patrick Mckee reached the third-place contest after winning nine-straight matches. Coming in as the No. 1 seed in his bracket, Mckee defeated his first opponent by technical fall and then fell into the consolation bracket after dropping a narrow 9-7 decision. There, Mckee rattled off nine-straight wins, eight by technical fall, to advance to the third-place match. The incoming freshman from St. Michael Albertville won his eleventh match of the tournament by a score of 8-6 to finish third in the nation.

The final signed Gopher to wrestle at the Junior Nationals was Jake Gliva. Gliva, a two-time Minnesota state champion from Simley High School, started his tournament off strong winning his first three matches by technical fall. Gliva reached the quarterfinals on the back of a 12-7 victory. Gliva bowed out in the last eight to the eventual champion and was unable to navigate through the consolation bracket to establish a podium finish.
