Mustangs to host Brown & Gold dual on Saturday

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will hold its annual Brown and Gold dual this Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym in preparation of the 2018-19 season.

The intra-squad scrimmage, which is scheduled to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m., will commence shortly after the conclusion of SMSU volleyball’s home match versus Minnesota State which begins at 2 p.m.

SMSU finished last season 7-8 overall with a conference mark of 2-6.

The 2018-19 roster features a total of 33 athletes that includes five seniors, eight juniors, four sophomores, three redshirt freshmen and 13 true freshmen. The Mustangs return eight wrestlers that competed at the NCAA Super Regional last February.

Senior Cortez Arredondo at 157 pounds headlines the returners after qualifying for the NCAA Championships a season ago. He placed second at the NCAA Super Regional and went 1-2 at the NCAA Championships to finish the season with 20 victories.

Junior 149-pounder Justin Haneke also returns after racking up 20 victories last season, including 4-3 in NSIC matches. Junior heavyweight Andrew Petersen recorded 18 victories a season ago and placed fifth at the NCAA Super Regional. At 197 pounds, junior Jackson Ryan returns following a 14-12 season in which he finished sixth at the NCAA Super Regional.

Also returning is junior Cole Hennen at 184, who finished 6-2 in conference duals last season and won 14 matches overall. Senior Kegen Fingalsen is back at 165 and has racked up 59 career victories, including a pair of 20-plus win seasons. Junior Brock Buysse returns at 133 after a 10-win season a year ago, while senior Griffin Osing at 174 rounds out the returning veterans after notching 29 victories in his career.

SMSU will compete in its first open tournament of the season on Nov. 10 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Following the Augsburg Open on Nov. 17, the Mustangs begin their 2018-19 dual season at home on Thursday, Nov. 29, versus defending NCAA champion St. Cloud State.
