Huskies open season with Red/Black classic

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – November is here, which means the St. Cloud State University wrestling season is finally upon us. The Huskies opened the 2018-19 season in outstanding fashion, as they partook in the exhibition match and unveiled the 2018 National Champions Banner in Halenbeck Hall Gymnasium Thursday evening.

The Red/Black match displayed the depth of the 2018-19 St. Cloud State wrestling roster, as the black team went on to win the competition by a final score of 30-6. Despite the seemingly lopsided score, only one match was won by more than a takedown, no Husky wrestler won by more than two points in decision matches.

scsulogoJames Pleski (Stacy, Minn. / Forest Lake) got things off to a strong start for the Black team as he took down redshirt-freshman Tanner Pasvogel (Arlington, Minn. / Sibley East) in a quick 45 seconds. However, the red team quickly got on the board, as Tanner Trembley (Lake Crystal, Minn. / Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) defeated Jake Barzowski (Park Ridge, Ill. / Notre Dame) by decision 3-2 to even the team score at 6-6.

After Trembley’s win, the black team went on to win the next six matches before Joey Bianchini Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Immaculate Conception Catholic) defeated Garrett Vos (Bonifacius, Minn. / Waconia) by decision 5-3. However, until that point, black won six consecutive matches thanks to wins from Devin FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn. / Mahtomedi), Kolton Eischens (Pierz, Minn. / Pierz-Healy), Chance Helmick (Beatrice, Neb. / Beatrice), Vince Dietz (Homer Glenn, Ill. / Lockport Township), Zach Muller (Woodridge, Ill. / Westmont) and Brett Velasquez (Bennington, Neb. / Bennington).

Garrett Aldrich (Albert Lea, Minn. / Albert Lea) defeated Adam Hedin (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) in the final match of the evening, while Mason Phillips (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) defeated Pasvogel in an exhibition match.

The Huskies national title defense will officially open their season on November 10 when they take on Dakota Wesleyan University in a dual match in Mitchel, South Dakota.
