MSUM Wrestling Takes Down Wolves, 25-12 to Open NSIC Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team won seven matches on Friday night to beat the Northern State Wolves 25-12 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

“This was a tremendous step forward for us,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. “We wrestled great up and down the lineup and won some tough matches.”

Sophomore Cole Jones started the dual with a 5-3 decision over Dayne Morton before sophomore Seth Hutchison scored a 9-8 decision over Nate Rodriguez. At 141 pounds the Wolves picked up six team points when Kolton Roth pinned Mason Schulz before Caden Moore beat Joe Schumacher in the 149-pound match via a 12-5 decision.

moorlogoAt 157 pounds, freshman Braydon Ortloff picked up a 5-3 win to send the match to a 9-9 tie heading into intermission.

Ortloff’s win set up a streak of four consecutive wins for MSUM, including redshirt freshman Justin Dravis beating Jake Flakus via fall at 165-pounds.

“The 165-pound match was huge,” Nelson said. “We needed a win there and Dravis hit a cradle and picked up a pin.”

The Wolves picked up a 6-1 decision at 197-pounds but sophomore Sam Erckenbrack won the 285-pound match in overtime 3-1.

The Dragons and Wolves will be among the teams competing on Saturday morning at the Dragon Open. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
