The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team opened its 2018-19 season with a strong showing at the 2018 Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Huskies captured the top spots at eight of the 10 weight brackets on the day.
At 125-pounds, Brandon Briggs and #2 Brett Velasquez both advanced to the championship match with 3-0 records for the Huskies at the Open. At 133-pounds, SCSU’s Joey Bianchini and Garrett Vos both advanced to the title match for the Huskies. Vos ended the day with a 3-0 record and Bianchini was 4-0 to start the season for the Huskies.
Success continued for the Huskies at 141-pounds, as Cameron Riggs placed third in the weight division followed by a first-place finish at 149-pounds by #1 ranked James Pleski. At 157-pounds, Jake Barzowski and Boone Giulio both shared top honors in the division for the Huskies. #10 ranked Devin FitzPatrick won the top spot at 165-pounds with an 8-3 win over Buena Vista’s Shane Vaughan.

The Huskies will return to action on Nov. 15 with a home dual match at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall against Chadron State. The day has been designated as Prep Night at SCSU and all youth in grades K-12 will be admitted to the match for just $1.00. Tickets are available at the gate on match night and all SCSU students get in FREE to this match.
