This past Saturday the Rochester Community and Technical College Yellowjackets kicked off their season by hosting the Yellowjacket Open. The tournament has significantly grown over the years boasting nearly 200 wrestlers from NCAA II, III, NAIA, and NJCAA schools.
The Yellowjackets wrestled well putting sophomore Shane Siewert (Lake City, MN), 174, and freshman Caleb Clobes (Madelia, MN), 125, into the finals.
Siewert went 3-1 on the day which included a huge win against 2017 NJCAA All-American Bunmi Smith of Iowa Lakes in the semifinals. In the finals, he dropped a close match at the end of the final period to Connor Williams of Upper Iowa University 5-4.
Clobes also went 3-1 making it to the finals of the tournament. In the finals, he lost to Eron Haynes of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Parker Huss (Jordan, MN), 141, went 4-1 on the day placing third in probably the toughest bracket of the tournament.
“For the first tournament of the year, we saw a lot of good things from the guys,” said wrestling coach Randy Rager. “Now that we’ve seen them compete we can work on some things individually with them to help them succeed.”
The Yellowjackets compete next in the Luther Open on November 12th in Decorah, IA. Wrestling begins at 9:00 am.
