The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team dominated competition today at the 2018 Newberry Duals with a perfect 4-0 record that featured wins over Queens University, Limestone, #12 Newberry and #9 Western Colorado.
The tournament was held in Newberry, S.D. on Sunday, Dec. 2. SCSU has now won 34 consecutive dual matches dating back to the 2016-17 season. The day of matches in South Carolina improves SCSU’s season record in 2018-19 to 6-0.
The Huskies opened the day with a 47-6 win over Queens University. Travis Swanson (141), Taner Trembley (157) and Tanner Eischens (174) all gained pins for the Huskies in the match, while SCSU also took advantage of three forfeit wins to collect the win.
In action against host and #12 ranked Newberry, the Huskies claimed a 44-3 victory. Brett Velasquez (125), Garrett Vos (133), Devin FitzPatrick (165) and Kolton Eischens (174) all gained pins in the match, while Noah Ryan (197) and James Pleski (149) added tech falls on the way to the victory.
To cap the day, SCSU posted an impressive 33-9 victory over #9 ranked Western State Colorado. Brett Velasquez (125), Riley Vanik (184) and Devin FitzPatrick (165) scored important falls for the Huskies in the match, while Garrett Vos (133), James Pleski (149) and Jake Barzowski (157) added extra points with major decision victories vs. Western.

The Huskies will continue their 2018-19 season on Dec. 5 with a dual match at home against Minot State. The match in Halenbeck Hall will start at 7 p.m. The match has been designated as Military Appreciation Night and all active military and veterans will be admitted FREE to this match.
On Dec. 8, the Huskies will host the annual Holiday Inn/Huskies Open in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. This event features many of the region’s top collegiate wrestlers and the action begins at 9 a.m. The day has been designated as SCSU Wrestling Parents Day.
