The Vikings Northern Sun Schedule now begins on Thursday
FREMONT, Neb. – True freshman Tyler Wagener and redshirt freshman Daniel Bishop both took home titles for Augustana on Saturday at the Warrior-Viking Open, as the Vikings close the pre-conference season strong, adding a pair of runner up finishes and six third place finishers at the final open tournament of the season.
Seeing his first action since the Yellowjacket Open on Nov. 3, Wagener captured the 149 lb. title in dominating fashion. After a bye in the first round, he advanced to the quarterfinals with an 11-1 major decision, to the semifinals with a 16-0 technical fall, and then pinned Grandview’s Tanner Abbas in a season-best time of 3 minutes and 22 seconds in the finals.
Over at 184 lbs., Bishop also got a bye, and then posted his first fall of the season on the second round, before closing the day with a pair of technical falls, starting with a 16-0 win in the semifinals and a 22-6 win over Tanner Vermaas from Grandview to win the title and improve to 16-9 on the season.
Wrestling for the first time since the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Nov. 10, junior Bailey Neises finished second at 165 lbs., while freshman Steve Hajas finished second at heavyweight.
Neises opened with a bye, advanced with a 6-4 decision and an 8-0 major decision before dropping a 6-1 decision to Talon Seitz from Nebraska-Kearney in the finals.
Like Neises, Hajas started the day with a bye, then earned a 13-2 major decision to advance to the semifinals, and then hung on for a 15-14 decision in the semis before dropping a 14-7 decision to Nebraska-Kearney’s Jarrod Hinrichs for the title.
Along with finishes in the top two spots, six Vikings Wrestled their way through the consolation bracket to finish the day with a win, including; Ethan Cota at 125 lbs., Jebben Keyes at 141 lbs., Colin Ayers at 157 lbs., Jackson Sweeney at 165 lbs., Lukas Poloncic at 174 lbs. and Clayton Wahlstrom at 197 lbs.
The final competition of the 2018 calendar year in the books, Vikings now turn their attention to the Northern Sun Schedule, which begins on Thursday, when Augustana makes the trek to Aberdeen to take on Northern State at 7 p.m.
