No. 20 NDSU Thunders Past Oregon State 31-13 in Scheels Center

FARGO, N.D.—No. 20-ranked North Dakota State won six of the first seven bouts including a pair of falls and two major decisions to thunder past Oregon State 31-13 in a non-conference dual on Thursday, Dec. 20, before 626 spectators in Scheels Center. The Bison improved to 3-0 at home this season.

NDSU (5-1, 2-1 #Big12WR) opens against No. 8 Cornell at 10 a.m. Central Time Saturday, Dec. 29, in the South Beach Duals in Fort Lauderdale. The Bison will then face Indiana at noon CT on Saturday, and take on West Virginia at 10 a.m. CT and No. 12 North Carolina at noon CT on Sunday, Dec. 30.

North Dakota State redshirt freshman 149-pounder Jaden Van Maanen (12-4 overall, 5-1 duals) got things started on the right foot with his fifth pin of the season at 5:55 over Zach Evans. After OSU’s No. 17-ranked 157 Hunter Willits won 10-4 over Nick Knutson (6-8, 2-4), the Bison quickly extended the lead to 12-3 when No. 17-ranked 165-pound Andrew Fogarty (8-2, 5-1) pinned Aaron Olmos at 3:24 for his fifth fall of the season.

A pair of hard-fought decisions followed to put NDSU ahead 18-3 as 174 Lorenzo De La Riva (10-6, 3-3) had a reversal of fortune in an 11-7 decision over Colt Doyle and Michael Otomo (6-3, 1-0) outmuscled Myles Terry for his first dual win of the season.

North Dakota State’s 197 Cordell Eaton (11-4, 4-2) and 285 Brandon Metz (9-6, 2-4) came through with major decisions that helped put the Bison up 26-3 after seven. Eaton with a 12-3 major decision over Bob Coleman and Metz a 15-6 winner over Jamarcus Grant.

In the top eight match-up at 125 pounds, Oregon State’s No. 3-ranked Ronnie Bresser (11-1, 3-0) turned a takedown midway in the second period into a pin at 3:43 over No. 8 Brent Fleetwood (13-3, 5-1) to cut the deficit to 26-9. Fleetwood’s three losses have been to wrestlers ranked in the top five this season.

NDSU No. 18-ranked 133 Cam Sykora (13-2, 5-0) recorded his sixth tech fall of the season and 30th in his career with 2-point near fall as time was running out at 19-3 over Kegan Calkins.

Oregon State (1-2, 1-0 Pac 12) 141-pounder Grant Willits closed out the dual with a 13-0 major decision over Sawyer Degen (8-8, 0-1).
