St. Cloud State’s Devin FitzPatrick captured the John Oxton Tournament Most Valuable Wrestler award at the 2018 Holiday Inn/Huskies Open, which was hosted by the #1 Huskies in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse on Dec. 8.
FitzPatrick gained the top honor at the meet with a first place finish in the 165-pound bracket. He posted a 5-4 victory over Division I rival Kenny O’Neil in the title bout. On the way to first place, FitzPatrick also gained a 6-5 win over Alfred Daniel of Rochester C.C. and a 4-2 victory over Ryan Epps of Augsburg.
SCSU also had other first place finishers at the tournament including Joey Bianchini at 141-pounds, Gannon Hughes at 157-pounds, Hunter Grau at 174-pounds, Tyree Overton at 184-pounds and Brady Reigstad at 285-pounds.
The #1 ranked Huskies will return to action on Jan. 4-5 with a trip to the NWCA Division II National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky. SCSU is the two-time defending NWCA National Duals champs and the Huskies have won the NWCA DII National Duals in 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018. Since 2011, SCSU has finished third place or higher at the NWCA DII National Duals.
