Vikings Close 2018 at the Warrior-Viking Open

The match will mark the season debut for a trio of wrestlers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — As the 2018 calendar year winds down, the Augustana wrestling team looks to close the year on a high note, and get ready for the Northern Sun season, on Saturday at the Warrior-Viking Open, hosted by Midland in Fremont, Neb.

The Vikings last took the mat on Dec. 15, at the Midwest Classic Invitational in Indianapolis, where a pair of wrestlers earned a place on the podium. Sophomore Jebben Keyes finished sixth at 141 lbs., earning decision wins in each of his first three bouts to advance through the championship bracket, before dropping his final three matches on his way to sixth place and an even 6-6 record on the season.

Senior Clayton Wahlstrom kicked off the Midwest Classic Invitational with a pin, the first of two on the day, before his luck ran out after a run in the consolation bracket for an eighth place finish. He looks to improve upon his 15-10 record.


Bailey Neises looks to build on his last outing, when he placed fourth at the DWU Open on Nov. 10, the junior enters the weekend with a 6-4 record on the season.

Both Dylan Schuck and Jacob Tvinnereim also took home a fourth place finishes in their last outing on Nov. 17 at the Finn Grinaker Open. Schuck, who enters the weekend with a 7-6 record in his redshirt freshman season, earned his finish at 165 lbs., while true freshman Tvinnereim finished fourth at 157 lbs., and looks to improve on his 8-4 record.

Jack Huffman last wrestled on Dec. 1, at the Jim Koch Wisconsin Open at 133 lbs., where the freshman took home a sixth place finish. He enters the weekend with an 11-5 record.

The Vikings final regular season tournament also marks the season debut for a trio of wrestlers, including 174 lb. junior Hunter Haman, along with freshmen Bailey Brengle at 165 lbs. and Samuel Detert at heavyweight.

Following the Warrior-Viking Open, Augustana opens the NISC season on Jan. 3, when the Vikings take on Northern State in Aberdeen, before returning home for the first home dual of the season against Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m.
