St. Cloud State University senior Brett Velasquez (Bennington, Neb.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Dec. 31 through Jan. 6.
The nation’s number one ranked NCAA Division II wrestler at 125-pounds, Velasquez chalked up a 4-0 record at the 2019 NWCA Division II National Duals on Jan. 4-5 in Louisville, Kentucky. Velasquez helped SCSU win the NWCA DII National Duals title for the third consecutive season and improved his season record to 11-0 for the #2 ranked Huskies.

Velasquez opened his weekend with a 16-0 tech fall win over Ryan Ressler of Seton Hill. In SCSU’s second dual of the tourney, Velasquez earned a 7-3 win over No. 10 Maleek Williams (the 2018 NCAA National Finalist).
On Jan. 5, Velasquez posted a big 5-4 decision against #2 ranked Josh Portillo of Nebraska-Kearney. The victory helped SCSU earn a 22-15 win over the #1 ranked Lopers and advanced to the championship match against Notre Dame of Ohio. He capped his weekend in the Bluegrass State with an 8-0 major decision over Roberto Campos of No. 3 Notre Dame in the championship dual that saw SCSU win 35-6. Velasquez is now 11-0 on the season.
SCSU will return to action on Jan. 12 at the Wisconsin-Parkside Ranger Duals, which will take place in Kenosha, Wisc. SCSU currently owns an 11-0, 2-0 NSIC record and also owns a 39 dual match win streak dating back to 2016-17. The NCAA DII national champs in 2015, 2016 and 2018, St. Cloud State has won seven consecutive NSIC championship and have not lost a conference dual match since 2011.
