#1 St. Cloud State scores 35-4 victory over NSIC rival UMary
The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (15-0, 3-0 NSIC) scored a 35-4 victory over NSIC rival #24 University of Mary (3-2, 1-2 NSIC) at Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, Jan.19 in St. Cloud, Minn.
Before a larger SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day crowd, the Huskies controlled the match from the start at #1 Brett Velasquez gained an 8-3 win over Mary’s Nate Humann at 125-pounds. SCSU’s lone setback on the day was a 13-5 loss by Brandon Briggs against UMary’s nationally ranked Tate Barnhardt at 133-pounds.
The Huskies quickly returned to the win column with a fall at 141-pounds by #8 ranked Garrett Aldrich at 1:30. SCSU stretched its lead at 149-pounds with an overtime win by James Pleski by a score of 6-4.
At 157-pounds, #7 Jake Barzowski added a 10-6 victory over Isaac Berger and #9 Devin FitzPatrick earned bonus points with a 10-2 major decision win over Austin Eichmann at 165-pounds. In a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers at 174-pounds, #3 Kolton Eischens of SCSU gained a big 18-0 tech fall victory over #7 ranked Phillip Springsteen of UMary. The Huskies continued to gain bonus points with major decision wins at 184-pounds by Chance Helmick and #1 ranked Vince Dietz at 197-pounds.
To cap the day, SCSU’s Noah Ryan scored a 7-2 win at 285-pounds against Mary’s Gerardo Jaime.
The Huskies have now won 43 consecutive dual matches dating back to Jan. 14, 2017. The Huskies have also won 56 consecutive NSIC dual matches dating back to an 18-13 loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011. Since that loss, SCSU has won seven consecutive NSIC titles in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.
SCSU WRESTLING NOTES: Vince Dietz is now 20-0 on the season for the Huskies and Chance Helmick is now 6-0…James Pleski is now 18-1 and Kolton Eischens is now 17-1 in 2018-19…SCSU coach Steve Costanzo now owns a 203-28 career record at SCSU dating back to 2006-07. He is in his 13th season as head coach at SCSU. On the topic of Costanzo, the Huskies have only lost seven dual matches since 2010-11. SCSU has won seven NSIC titles under the leadership of Costanzo, and the Huskies have won three NCAA DII national titles in 2015, 2016 and 2018. SCSU has not lost an NSIC dual match since Jan. 27, 2011, and the Huskies currently own a 55 match win streak in NSIC dual match competition.
