The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (11-0, 2-0 NSIC) captured its third consecutive NWCA DII National Duals championship with a dominant 35-6 victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) in the title match on Saturday, Jan. 5 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Huskies ended their two-day trip to the NWCA DII National Duals with a 4-0 record that included wins over Seton Hill, #21 Upper Iowa, #1 Nebraska Kearney and #3 Notre Dame (OH).
SCSU won eight of the first nine matches against Notre Dame to claim the victory. #1 Brett Velasquez opened the match with an 8-0 major victory followed by a 5:38 fall by #8 Travis Swanson over #2 Kelen McKenna of ND at 141-pounds.
#3 James Pleski (149) and #7 Jake Barzowski (157) both gained decision wins for the Huskies before #4 Devin FitzPatrick posted a 2:00 fall at 165-pounds for SCSU. The results were then clinched with wins by #3 Kolton Eischens (174), Chance Helmick (184) and #1 Vince Dietz (197) for the Huskies.
SCSU has now won the NWCA DII National Duals championship five times, including 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013 and 2012. SCSU placed second in 2016 and third in 2015 and 2011. Since 2010, SCSU has placed no lower than seventh place at the NWCA DII National Duals tournament.
The Huskies have now won 39 consecutive dual matches dating back to 2016-17. SCSU has also won NCAA DII championships in 2015, 2016 and 2018 along with winning seven consecutive NSIC titles dating back to 2012.
SCSU will return to the mats on Jan. 12 at the UW-Parkside Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wisc. Complete results from the match against Notre Dame (OH) are listed below.
