St. Cloud State regains number one national ranking

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (11-0, 2-0 NSIC) returned to the top of the NCAA Division II national poll with a #1 ranking in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association top 25 poll, which was released on Jan. 11.

The Huskies tallied 85 points in the poll and had eight individual wrestlers ranked in the poll. SCSU moved ahead of previous number one Nebraska Kearney, which dropped down to second place in the poll with 79 points. SCSU recently scored a dual match win over the Lopers on the way first place at the 2019 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament on Jan. 4-5 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The poll’s top five was completed by #3 Notre Dame of Ohio, #T4 McKendree and #T4 Wheeling Jesuit. The Huskies recently earned a victory over Notre Dame at the NWCA DII National Duals and SCSU is slated to match up against McKendree at the 2019 Ranger Duals on Jan. 12 in Kenosha, Wisc.

Individually, St. Cloud State senior Vince Dietz maintained his status as the number one ranked 197-pounder in NCAA DII wrestling this season, and senior Brett Velasquez also stayed in the #1 spot at 125-pounds this week.

The other Huskies ranked nationally in this week’s poll included Garrett Vos (#11 at 133-pounds), Garrett Aldrich (#8 at 141-pounds), James Pleski (#3 at 149-pounds), Jake Barzowski (#7 at 157-pounds), Devin FitzPatrick (#9 at 165-pounds) and Kolton Eischens (#3 at 174-pounds).

NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Rankings

SCSU will continue its season on Jan. 12 with a trip to the UW-Parkside Ranger Duals. The Huskies are scheduled to match up against #4 McKendree, #12 Indianapolis and RV UW-Parkside.
