The Gophers received the national letter of intent from top 182-pound prospect, Devin Winston to officially join the Gopher Wrestling program. Winston is a two-time state finalist who won the state title in 2017.
The senior from Park Hill, Missouri, is currently ranked No.1 at the 182-pound weight class by FloWrestling. Winston finished third at Ironman, beat fellow top prospect Abe Assad at “Who’s #1” and won the Kansas City Stampede.
“Devin has won at every level of wrestling,” assistant coach Trevor Brandvold said. “He’s a competitor that is a nightmare match-up for his opponents because he can level change, scramble, and is a tough rider with incredible length. We will have a lot of quality guys battling it out for our upper weight spots.”
Winston’s addition gives the Gophers another young, athletic wrestler at the alongside 18 underclassmen already on the roster.
Winston joins a recruiting class that already boasts champions from Wisconsin, Montana, and California as well as several local wrestlers.
“Landing a recruit like Devin Winston is another big step for our program in getting back to the top of NCAA wrestling,” Brandvold added. “We feel like had had a strong 2018 class and now Devin and our other commitments we’re extremely excited about this young core going forward.”
Cael Carlson of Willmar, Sebas Swiggum of Apple Valley, and Rowan Morgan of Mounds View will represent their home state while the class also includes Lockport, Illinois standouts Baylor Fernandes and Matt Ramos, three-time Montana State Champion Martin Wilkie, Wisconsin state champion Kevin Meicher, and California native Marcos Polanco.
