MSUM Wrestling Falls Short in Upset Bid Against No. 19 Upper Iowa, 18-15
MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team came up just short against the No. 19 Upper Iowa Peacocks on Saturday afternoon losing an 18-15 dual. Both teams won five matches on the afternoon.
The dual started at 125 pounds where sophomore Cole Jones knocked off the returning national runner-up Maleek Willimas via 12-9 decision.
“That win at 125 was huge,” head coach Kris Nelson said. “Cole came out and worked hard and picked up a win over the returning runner-up, which started us off on a good note and from there we continued the momentum.”
After Upper Iowa won at 133 pounds redshirt freshman Mason Schulz hit a takedown in the closing seconds to win a decision over Wilson Metellus.
The next win for the Dragons came at 157 pounds where freshman Braydon Ortloff beat Tucker Black in overtime to put the Dragons up 9-8. After a loss at 165 pounds, the Dragons won the next two matches with wins from Adam Blees and Evan Foster before dropping the final two matches.
MSUM will be back in action on Thursday night when they host the No. 1 St. Cloud State Huskies at 7 p.m.
