Eight Gophers Named in NCAA Coaches Ranking and RPI

The NCAA released the latest edition of their coaches ranking on February 14 and ranked eight Gophers, including six in the top-10 of their weight classes. In the first installment of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) the Gophers also have eight wrestlers among the list. Both measurements will be used to help organize wrestlers for seeding at the NCAA Tournament from March 21-23.

Heavyweight Gable Steveson ranked first among heavyweights with an undefeated 26-0 record. He is followed by 125-pound Sean Russell in sixth place, 133-pound Ethan Lizak and 141-pound Mitch McKee in eighth, and 157-pound Steve Bleise in ninth place. Devin Skatzka rounds out the top-ten among 174-pounders to give the Gophers six among the top-ten.

Redshirt senior Tommy Thorn is ranked No.21 among the 149-pound weight class and the final Gopher is 165-pound Carson Brolsma coming in at No.30.

The NCAA also released their RPI, a statistical measurement of wrestlers. Steveson, a consensus No.1 among rankings, falls to third place in the RPI index while Bleise rises up to fourth behind three fellow Big Ten wrestlers.

Among the rest of the Gophers Russell and Lizak find themselves ranked eighth and Skatzka is ranked 15, with RPI ranking Brolsma at 19 Thorn at 26. 197-pound Dylan Anderson is No.25 in the RPI after finding himself unranked by the coaches.

McKee did not qualify for RPI rankings due to number of matches wrestled this season.
