MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minnesota State University Moorhead sophomores Jordan Magnuson and Cole Jones have punched their tickets to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. Magnuson finished second at 285 while Jones finished third at 125 at Saturday’s Super Region V meet which was held at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
The top three individuals from each weight class earned trips to nationals which are set for March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Magnuson (5-5 on the season)had a big day at 285. He opened with a bye and then edged Joseph Foret of Wisconsin-Parkside 3-2 in the quarterfinals. He followed with a 3-1 win over Northern State’s Harrison Townsend in the semifinals, setting up a final with Minot State’s Jordan Will. Will prevailed 4-1 as Magnuson settled for second. He will be making his first trip to nationals.
Jones reached the semifinals, but lost to defending national runner-up Maleek Williams of Upper Iowa 9-5 to drop into the consolation bracket. Jones rebounded with a pin of Andrew McFall of Minnesota State in his first consolation bracket. Jones punched his ticket to nationals with a 8-4 win over Minot State’s Dean Arvalo in the third-place match. He is now 26-8 on the season and will be making his first trip to nationals.
Redshirt freshman Evan Foster finished fifth at 184 after going 3-2. He beat Lance Jarrett of Mary 9-5 to open the day and then lost to Trevor Turriff of Minnesota State, 10-4 in the quarters. Foster bounced back with a 16-6 win over Augie’s Daniel Bishop and then followed with an 8-0 win over Dalton Hahn of Upper Iowa. Foster fell to James Lehman of Wisconsin-Parkside, 7-4 in the next round to drop into the fifth place match, which he won by injury default.
Redshirt freshman Mason Schulz (141) went 3-2 on the day to take fifth. He lost his first match by fall but came back to pin Kolton Roth of Northern State in 59 seconds. He lost a heartbreaking 6-4 overtime decision to Ryan Schmalen of Upper Iowa. Schulz finished strong with a pin of Keaton Schorr of Augustana in 1:09 to earn fifth.
Senior Adam Blees finished sixth at 174 in his final meet as a Dragon. He lost his first match, 8-2 to Minnesota STate’s Zach Johnston but came back with a 5-2 win over Northern State’s Tanner Wiese. Blees then rolled past Minot State’s Anthony Raupp, 18-5. Blees battled UMary’s Philip Springsteen tough until the final seconds before falling 4-3. Blees lost to Johnston 9-4 in the fifth-place match to finish 17-12.
Sophomore Seth Hutchison (133) went 1-2 at 133. He earned an 11-0 major decision win over Oscar Nellis of Minot in the consolation round before losing to Kenny Jones of Northern State 15-3 to end his day. Sophomore Mitch Kotschevar (197) also went 1-2 at 197, highlighted by a win over UMary’s Ryan Stottler in the first round, but was eliminated by Wisconsin-Parkside’s Job Ayala 20-6 in the wrestlebacks.
Senior Dylan Connell (149), freshman Braydon Ortloff (157) and redshirt freshman Justin Dravis (165) each went 0-2 and were eliminated earlier in the day.
Magnuson and Jones will advance to compete at nationals on March 8-9.
