MWCA Scholarship Recipients 2019

The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has awarded six $1,000 scholarships this year. Any Senior who has wrestled at a Minnesota High School and is college-bound was eligible to apply.

Here are this year’s scholarship winners:

Riley Habisch, the son of Jeff and Suzette Habisch, is a two-time wrestling state place winner for Buffalo High School and is coached by Ben Pressler. In addition to wrestling, Riley was a member of the football team where he holds the school rushing record. Riley participates in track at Buffalo High School and is active in his church and community as a volunteer. Riley plans on attending North Dakota State.

Cael Carlson of Willmar High School is the son of Chad and Kindra Carlson and is coached by Ed Oehlers. Cael is a three-time Wrestling State Tournament entrant, has placed second twice and won a state championship in 2018. In addition to wrestling, Cael has been a State Cross Country participant three times and is a six-year letter winner as a member of the track team. Cael is an “A” student, a member of the National Honor Society and active in the school choir. He also participates in 4-H, where has served as president of his club, and showed the Minnesota State Fair top dairy holstein. Cael plans on attending the University of Minnesota.

Ty Moser wrestles at Perham High School and is the son of Robb and Eryn Moser. He is coached by his father, Robb. Ty is a three-time wrestling state tournament entrant and has placed third twice. Ty is an “A” student and is ranked in the top 10 of his class. Ty is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a member of the Student Council for two years. He is active in his church and the community as a volunteer. Ty will attend North Dakota State University.

Tyler Ryan from Kenyon -Wanamingo High School is a two-time state wrestling tournament entrant and was a State Champion in 2017. He is the son of Matt and Molly Ryan and is coached by Matt Ryan. Ryan is active in many school activities. He is a member of the football, baseball, golf, and trapshooting teams. He is a member of the high school band, the National Honor Society and was his school’s AAA award winner. Tyler will attend St. Cloud State University.

Sebas Swiggum of Apple Valley High School is the son of Paul and Sue Swiggum and is coached by Josh Barlage. Sebas is a two-time state wrestling tournament entrant and has placed second and third. Sebas is an outstanding student, currently ranking first in his class of 379 students. Sebas is the captain of Apple Valley’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is an outstanding pianist and has volunteered extensively in his church and community. Sebas will attend the University of Minnesota.

Tyler Bents wrestles at Belgrade – Brooten – Elrosa High School where he is coached by Jack Mueller. He is the son of Nick and Kristine Bents. Tyler is a five-time state wrestling tournament entrant and placed third last year. Tyler also participates in football and track and field at BBE, and he has been team captain in both sports. He has been a member of the BBE Student Council for six years and is currently the President. Tyler, an outstanding student, is ranked in the top 10 in his class and is a member of the National Honor Society. He also volunteers extensively in his church and community. Tyler plans on attending Concordia College of Moorhead.
