No. 14 Augustana Goes Head-to-Head With No. 1 St. Cloud State

Vikings enter the match at 5-3 overall, 4-3 NSIC

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The regular season comes to a close for the No. 14 Augustana wrestling team with its toughest test of the year on Thursday, when the Vikings host top-ranked and defending national champion St. Cloud State inside the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.

Thursday also marks Senior Night for the Vikings, as Augustana will honor its four seniors on the 2018-19 roster.

The Vikings enter the dual with a 5-3 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the Northern Sun Conference, while the Huskies come to Sioux Falls with an unblemished mark of 19-0, which includes a 7-0 record in the NSIC and an overall winning streak of 47 straight dual wins, dating back to Jan. 14, 2017, with a 31-10 win over Findlay, and a 60-match NSIC winning streak, which dates back to Jan. 27, 2011, an 18-13 loss to Augustana.

Augustana split a pair of competitive duals during the final road trip of the season last weekend, falling 18-17 on Saturday at U-Mary, before bouncing back with a 21-18 win at Minot State on Sunday.

Tyler Wagener (149 lbs.), Colin Ayers (157 lbs.) and Clayton Wahlstrom (197 lbs.) all won both of their matches on the weekend. Ranked No. 9 in the latest rankings, Wahlstrom stayed undefeated in NSIC action with the sweep, moving to 7-0, with a 26-11 overall record.

Ayers comes in one win behind Wahlstrom with a 25-9 overall record to go with his 6-1 mark in the NSIC, while Wagener enters the final dual with a 10-4 record on the season to go with his 5-3 NSIC record.

The Huskies, who enter the match following a 30-0 win over No. 10 Minnesota State in their last outing on Saturday, when they sent ranked wrestlers into all nine matches, eight of them wins, with one forfeit at 165 lbs.

Augustana leads the all-time series with St. Cloud State, which dates back to the 1980-81 season, 21-20, but the Huskies won each of the last seven meetings.

Following Thursday’s regular season finale, the Vikings return to action at the NCAA Regional on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
