NDSU Reclaims Border Bell with Convincing 31-10 Win Over South Dakota State

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State ended a four-match losing streak over three years to South Dakota State with a 31-10 win in a Big12 Conference dual before a season-high 949 spectators in the Scheels Center on Friday, Feb. 15. The Bison won their fourth straight dual win and also reclaimed the Border Bell trophy.

South Dakota State (2-9, 1-6 #Big12WR) jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Zach Carlson’s 17-2 tech fall at 7:00, but North Dakota State reeled off five straight wins to take control. It wasn’t easy. Cordell Eaton (17-7, 10-5) claimed a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Martin Mueller at 197 pounds, then Brandon Metz (14-10, 5-8) edged Blake Wolters 8-7 on riding time in the heavyweight match to put the Bison ahead 6-5.

No. 9-ranked Brent Fleetwood (20-3, 12-1) recorded his second fall of the season at 3:53 at 125 pounds to extend the lead to 12-5. Fleetwood became the first NDSU wrestler to reach 20 wins this season.

No. 16-ranked Cam Sykora (19-5, 11-3) held off Rylee Molitor for a 7-2 decision at 133 pounds, while 141-pound freshman Sawyer Degen (9-13, 1-6) posted a 9-5 decision over Aric Williams for his first dual win of the season.

SDSU’s No. 13-ranked 149 Henry Pohlmeyer trailed late in the third period, but turned the tables on Jaden Van Maanen to record a fall at 6:48.

The Bison bounced back and closed strong with three wins. Luke Weber (9-2, 5-1) fought off a late charge from Colten Carlson for a 10-7 decision at 157 pounds. No. 18-ranked 165 Andrew Fogarty (16-3, 13-2) rolled to his eighth straight win and sixth with bonus points with a 16-0 tech fall at 4:32. NDSU 174 Lorenzo De La Riva (16-8, 9-5) ended the dual with his third fall of the season at 6:45.

Both teams were deducted a team point for match misconduct.

The Jackrabbits end their four-dual Big 12 road swing next Friday (Feb. 22) at Oklahoma. Start time is 6 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center on the OU campus in Norman, Oklahoma.

NDSU (10-5, 5-3 #Big12WR) is scheduled to close out the regular season at Oklahoma (6-6, 1-3 #Big12WR) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb 24, in Norman.
