SMSU closes home season with victory over MSU Moorhead

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team closed its home season with a 24-16 victory over MSU Moorhead on Friday night in the PE Gym.

SMSU picked up its first victory of the season to advance to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC while MSUM drops to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference after dropping a match last night to conference-leader, St. Cloud State.

Cole Hennen started the night with a 3-1 decision victory at 197. The bout was locked at 1-1 until the final five seconds when Hennen earned a takedown to earn a personal victory and gave SMSU an early 3-0 lead. Tonight’s bout victory was the second consecutive conference victory for Hennen who is 2-4 in the conference this season.

At 285, Andrew Petersen dropped the next bout by decision and SMSU’s forfeit at 125 put MSUM up 9-3 before 133.

Brock Buysse earned his first conference victory this season at 133 with a 2-1 decision win over MSUM’s Seth Hutchison. The bout was locked scoreless before Buysse earned a reversal to gain a 2-0 lead. Buysse’s decision win came to a 2-1 final after the addition of riding time.

Justin Haneke picked up his third conference victory with a win by fall at 4:42 over Dylan Connell at 149. Haneke cut the Mustangs’ deficit to 13-12.

Cortez Arredondo followed up with a 10-9 decision victory over Braydon Ortloff at 157. The bout finished locked at 9-9 but Arredondo claimed the win after the addition of riding time to put SMSU up 15-13.

For the first time this season, SMSU earned three consecutive bout victories with Kegen Fingalsen’s win by fall at 4:18 over MSUM’s Justin Dravis

Griffin Osing finished the match with his first conference victory this season with a 5-4 win over MSUM’s Evan Foster.

Tonight was the final home meet for SMSU seniors Jordan Biehn, Zach Beaumaster, Cortez Arredondo, Kegen Fingalsen, and Griffin Osing.

The Dragons will be back in action on Feb. 10 when they host Minnesota State Mankato at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. That is Senior Day and also the regular-season finale for MSUM.

Southwest Minnesota State completes the regular season next weekend with a road-trip to UMary on Friday at 7 p.m. and Minot State on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start time.
